• 갓 태어난 신생아나 그 이후 신생아, 또는 영아는 여러 가지 이유로 심하게 울고 보챌 수 있다. 
• 신생아가 어디가 아파서 울 때의 울음소리의 음색, 음량, 톤과 다른 이유로 울 때의 울음소리의 음색, 음량, 톤에 차이가 많다. 
• 대부분의 신생아들은 배가 고플 때 보채고 울 수 있다. 그 때 울음소리의 음색, 음량, 톤과 그 외 다른 때의 울음소리의 음색, 음량, 톤이  다르고 그들의 신체 언어도 다르다. 
• 뇌막염이나 두개강 내 출혈, 복강 내 질병이나 흉강 내 어떤 질병으로 심하게 아플 때도 아기들이 심하게 보챌 수 있고, 때로는 신음 소리를 내면서 울기도 하고, 이때 아픈 아기를 보면 참 가엽다. 
• 이와 같이 신생아나 영아가 울 때 그의 울음소리에 음색, 음량, 톤이 다르고 우는 원인에 따라 울음의 음색, 음량, 톤, 신체 언어가 다르다. 
• 심하게 보채면서 우는 아기도 있고 보채지 않고 울기만 하는 아기도 있다. 
• 잠깐 동안 울기도 하고 오랫동안 울기도 한다. 
• 아무리 달래도 울음을 그치지 않는 경우도 있다. 
• 아기가 울면 우는 원인이 무엇인지 알아보면서 그 원인에 따라 아기를 보살핀다. 
• 아기가 먹지 않고, 잘 자지 않고, 웃지도 않고 달랠 수 없이 울면 독성 상태(Toxic state)에 있고 아주 위험한 상태이다. 
• 이런 경우는 의사에게 바로 문의해야 한다([부모도 반의사가 되어야 한다- 소아가정간호백과]-제3권 태아, 신생아, 여유아. 하령기 아, 사춘기 아이들의성장발육-울음 참조).
